FAQs

Every question you have about your skin, our products, and how it all works — answered honestly, from one skin nerd to another.

Barrier First Skincare

Barrier First Skincare is the philosophy at the heart of everything we make at Skin Soul Botanica. Instead of chasing skin types or symptoms — oily, dry, acne-prone, sensitive — we start with the skin barrier.

Your skin barrier is your outermost layer of skin. Think of it as the wall that protects everything underneath. When it's healthy, your skin is balanced, resilient, and glowing. When it's compromised, you get dryness, breakouts, redness, dullness, sensitivity — the whole list.

The source of almost every skin concern is a compromised barrier. Address the barrier first and a lot of those concerns start to resolve on their own.

That's the foundation of every formula we make — support and strengthen the skin barrier with clean, botanical ingredients so your skin can do what it was designed to do.

Most natural skincare addresses symptoms — a serum for dryness, a mask for breakouts, a toner for pores. You end up with a 10-step routine and skin that still isn't behaving.

Skin Soul Botanica takes a different approach. We focus on the root cause — barrier health — and build simple, intentional routines around that. Fewer products, better ingredients, real results. We're not clinical and we're not generic wellness. We're botanical luxury that actually works.

Yes — and here's why. A healthy skin barrier doesn't just happen. It's maintained. Even skin that looks fine can have a compromised barrier that hasn't started showing symptoms yet. Daily exposure to environmental stressors, harsh products, and synthetic ingredients quietly depletes barrier function over time.

Supporting your barrier now is what creates skin longevity — skin that stays balanced, resilient, and healthy as you age. Think of it less as fixing a problem and more as protecting an investment.

Our Products

Yes. Every ingredient is hand-selected with one question in mind: does this serve the skin barrier? We formulate without synthetic fragrances, harsh preservatives, parabens, sulfates, or any ingredient that disrupts barrier function.

We're also a small-batch brand — Amber formulates and produces every product herself in small quantities. That means fresher product, more control over quality, and full transparency about what goes in each formula.

Our formulas are built around barrier support, which makes them well-suited for sensitive skin — that said, sensitivity is personal and we can't guarantee how any individual skin will respond to any ingredient.

We always recommend a patch test before full use, especially if you have known allergies or highly reactive skin. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist or behind your ear and wait 24 hours before applying to your face.

If you're unsure which products are right for your skin, take our Skin Quiz or reach out directly — Amber personally responds to skin questions.

Because we formulate with natural botanical ingredients and without synthetic preservatives, our products have a shorter shelf life than conventional skincare. Most products are best used within 9–12 months of opening.

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Keep lids and caps tightly closed between uses
  • Use clean, dry hands or a spatula to avoid contaminating the product
  • Do not add water to any product

Small batch also means fresher product — we make in limited quantities so what you receive hasn't been sitting in a warehouse for months.

We source from trusted botanical suppliers and wherever possible use organic or wildcrafted ingredients. Amber even grows some of her own botanicals — including calendula, which is a key ingredient in our Calm serum.

Every ingredient is selected for a specific function. Nothing is in our formulas for decoration or fragrance. If it's in there, it's earning its place.

We built two tools specifically for this. Start with our Skin Quiz for a quick recommendation, or use our Build Your Regimen tool if you want Amber's personal recommendation sent directly to your inbox.

The short version: almost everyone benefits from starting with a clean oil cleanser (Melt), a hydrating toner (Dew), and a barrier-supporting facial oil (Renew or Calm depending on your skin). From there you layer in targeted support.

We do not add synthetic fragrance to any of our products — ever. Synthetic fragrance is one of the most common skin barrier disruptors and has no place in a barrier-first formula.

Some products have a natural scent from the botanicals and essential oils they contain — Renew has a light, earthy aroma from frankincense and jasmine. This is the natural scent of the ingredients, not added fragrance.

Yes — all Skin Soul Botanica products are cruelty-free. We never test on animals. Our formulas are plant-based and botanical. If anything changes in a specific formula, we will always disclose it clearly on the product page.

Skin Concerns

Yes — and this is where Barrier First Skincare really shines. Acne is almost always connected to a compromised barrier. When the barrier is disrupted, skin overproduces oil to compensate, pores get congested, and breakouts follow.

Stripping acne-prone skin with harsh cleansers and treatments makes it worse. Supporting the barrier with clean, nourishing botanicals helps skin regulate itself. Many of our customers with acne-prone skin see the biggest improvements once they stop fighting their skin and start supporting it.

We recommend starting with Melt (oil cleansing is excellent for acne-prone skin — it dissolves excess sebum without disrupting the barrier) and Calm (calendula-infused, deeply soothing).

Rosacea and chronic redness are closely linked to barrier dysfunction. When the barrier is compromised, the skin can't regulate inflammation properly and triggers become more frequent.

Our formulas are free from the most common rosacea triggers — synthetic fragrance, alcohol, sulfates, and harsh actives. We recommend starting slowly, patch testing everything, and building gradually. Calm and Dew are typically the most gentle starting points for reactive skin.

That said, rosacea is a medical condition and we always recommend working with a dermatologist alongside any skincare routine.

This is one of the most common skincare misconceptions. Oily skin is almost always a sign of a dehydrated, compromised barrier — the skin overproduces oil because it's trying to protect itself.

The right facial oil actually signals to your skin that it doesn't need to overproduce sebum. Lightweight, non-comedogenic oils like jojoba, squalane, and rosehip — all found in our formulas — work with your skin's natural chemistry rather than against it.

Most people with oily skin are shocked by how much it balances out once they start using the right oils consistently.

Gua Sha

Gua sha is an ancient Chinese healing technique that uses a smooth stone tool to gently massage the face using specific strokes and pressure. It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for healing and circulation.

For the face, consistent gua sha practice:

  • Reduces puffiness through lymphatic drainage
  • Improves circulation and creates a natural glow
  • Supports lifting and sculpting over time with consistent use
  • Relieves facial tension (jaw, forehead, around the eyes)
  • Helps product absorption when used with a facial oil

It's one of the only at-home treatments where you can see a visible difference after the very first session.

Absolutely — gua sha is one of the most accessible at-home skin treatments you can learn. Technique matters more than experience, which is why we created our free 5-Day Gua Sha Challenge specifically for beginners.

You'll get step-by-step video instruction delivered to your inbox over five days, and you'll see a difference by Day 1. The videos are yours to keep and refer back to whenever you need a refresher.

Stone type does matter — different stones have different properties and we put a lot of thought into which ones we carry. We have a full Stone Philosophy guide on our site that walks through each stone and who it's best suited for.

The most important thing is that your stone is smooth, well-shaped for facial contours, and that you're using it consistently with the right technique and a good facial oil underneath. Our Renew or Glow oils are ideal for gua sha practice.

For best results, 3–5 times per week. Even 5–10 minutes is enough to see and feel a difference. Daily practice is ideal but consistency over intensity is the key — a short session three times a week beats one long session on Sunday.

Most people work gua sha into their evening skincare routine after cleansing and applying their facial oil.

If your order arrives damaged or incorrect, please contact us within 7 days of confirmed delivery and we'll make it right. See our full Shipping & Return Policy for details.

We're sorry to hear that — skin reactions to natural ingredients, while uncommon, do happen. Individual skin chemistry varies and we cannot predict or guarantee how every skin will respond.

If you experience irritation, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare provider if needed. We always recommend a patch test before full application, especially if you have known sensitivities.

Because reactions are personal and not a result of a product defect, we are unable to offer refunds for sensitivity reactions. This is why we encourage you to review the full ingredient list and patch test before committing to full use.

Wholesale & Partners

Yes — we have an active wholesale program for licensed estheticians and aligned retail partners. Our program includes discounted pricing, access to our Pro Partner education hub with treatment protocols and ingredient education, and ongoing support from Amber directly.

Our wholesale program is designed specifically for licensed estheticians and approved retail partners — boutiques, wellness spaces, and spas whose values align with clean, barrier-focused skincare.

We're not trying to be in every store. We're building partnerships with people who care about education, ingredients, and actually getting results for their clients. If that's you, fill out the application and let's talk.
